Physical Education, School Sport and Club Links
Early results of the annual PESSCL survey show over 3,000 young people are now participating
in 2 hours more of PE and school sport than last year within the New Forest district.
There are seven key areas for development and these are listed below along with
some examples from year one.

Point one Increased participation in high quality Physical Education
Currently schools in the New Forest deliver on average 105 minutes of PE within the curriculum, 15mins below the national expectation, only 55% of schools in our area achieve the desired 2 hours. A number of schools have already made a significant change for next year with Arnewood School in New Milton doubling their PE for 2006/7 to 2 hours.
The Partnership now employs a full time Multi Skills coach to deliver both curricular and after school clubs across the Partnership to ensure high quality delivery and increase of ability of pupils with regards to the basic skills of agility, balance and co ordination.
Part-time coaches in Rugby, Table Tennis and Tennis also receive funding from the Sports College and Partnership. Schools and therefore pupils are accessing many more high quality clubs and activities than ever before.

Point two Increased participation in high quality competition & performance
In partnership with New Forest Primary School Sports we delivered 15 central venue competitions from Cross Country to Netball and Hockey, over 2,500 pupils attended these events which were heavily supported by many local sports clubs thus providing a link to the local community participation.
A number of competitions have been hosted at secondary schools and run by the PE department and young leaders including the preliminary events for the Hampshire youth Games.

Point three Increased participation in high quality Out of School hours learning
A number of schools have supported parents and lunchtime assistants to attend training courses such as Netball and Tag rugby to provide the school with additional personnel to deliver breakfast, lunchtime and after school clubs. Some examples of events can be seen in the review.

Point four Improved attitude, behaviour and attendance in PE and Whole school
Schools have looked to increase the range of sports provided within the curriculum and outside of the curriculum as well as leadership courses to engage those pupils not currently participating or enjoying PE.
In the past year over 200 teachers have attended courses to increase their skill base and deliver a higher quality and wider range of activity. The recent Junior Football course saw record numbers for the county attend the course at Testwood.

Point five Increased participation in high quality informal physical activity
From next year pupils will be supported and rewarded to lead activities on playgrounds and fields for pupils at lunchtimes. Testwood piloted a scheme which has seen both activity levels increase and behavioural issues decline.
Lunchtime assistants will be encouraged, supported and rewarded to lead pupils into activities at lunchtimes. This will see the return of many playground based activities such as skipping games and multi sports activities.

Point six Increased attainment and achievement in and through PE, OSHL and sport
Currently 5% of pupils across the partnership take part in Leadership based courses, such as Dance Leaders, Rugby Leaders, Junior Football Leaders and the generic Junior Sports Leaders award. These young people then go out into the community to support and organise activities for pupils in primary schools and local clubs.
As recently publicised the School Sport Partnership is at the forefront of delivery to ensure that every pupil entering a secondary school can swim the national requirement of 25 metres, funding will be provided to insure every young person can attend swimming programmes at local leisure centres.

Point seven Increased participation in community based sport and improved quality of community life
A number of Service Level agreements with clubs have been put in place to ensure pupils can easily transfer from school based activity to clubs, at Testwood Sports College, Applemore Netball Club provide Testwood and Hounsdown pupils with high quality coaching, in return for reduced hire fees for their club.
Secondly BAT Cricket Club colts section worked with Testwood Sports College to access a Lottery Grant of £5,000 which went a long way towards the provision of new nets and equipment in the school sports hall. Pace FC, one of the biggest junior football clubs now base all of their football teams including girls and boys at Testwood Sports College.

Already we have made massive strides forward to increase and improve PE and School sport across the Partnership, this has been a small snapshot of the work that has gone on throughout the year but we hope that it helps to increase the awareness of the Partnership.
