Tag Rugby Skills Festival
Testwood Sports College
May 2nd 2008
Testwood Sports College hosted the New Forest Primary School Sport Mini Tag Rugby Festival this year, but with a difference.
The festival now runs alongside the National Competition Framework for this age group (school years 3 and 4) in which the children should take part in an approach that offers activities that use a variety of approaches, which impact upon the FUNdamental movement and FUNdamental Rugby Skills.
The ultimate aim was to improve and measure young people’s movement competencies, confidence and understanding of basic skills in order to recognise talent and future potential.
The festival was split in two, with a multi skills festival taking place followed by a mini tournament based on their skill levels. The Multi Skill stage was also split into three areas, Agility, Balance and Co-ordination (the three FUNdamentals of movement).
Activities ranged from slalom to stepping stones to the balance beam and even target throws. Most of the activities involved a rugby ball, in order to make the skill specific to the sport.
It was Blackfield A who finished top of the skill stage and went into a group along side Ballard and Tiptoe, the two teams that finished second and third. In the next pool were Orchard A, Blackfield B and Ashley and in the final pool were Orchard B, Our Lady St Joseph and Pennington schools. Ballard, Orchard A and Orchard B all won their groups.
The event was once again supported by Testwood Sports College and its Junior Sports Leaders from Year 10.
