Primary Kwik Cricket -
Totton and Eling Cricket Club
May 20th 2009
The seventh Kwik cricket festival took place in May at Totton and Eling Cricket Club with 160 children batting it out against each other. The day started well with the rain staying away and the sun shining bright. Teams came from Waterside School, two-time winners Foxhills School, New Milton, Marchwood, Wildground, Hyde, Hale and many other competitive schools.
The first round of games saw some high scores from the likes of New Milton, Abbotswood and Foxhills. But other teams were not making it easy for them in the early rounds as they too were hitting teams for plenty of fours and sixes. Things started to heat up after lunch with the final games in the group stages proving vital for some team’s progression in the competition. Once over, the quarter-finals were drawn and Abbotswood B were up against two-time winners Foxhills. This game proved to be very exciting with Abbotswood B causing a big upset and winning the game in the last few balls.
Other games followed a similar pattern and an undetected team was starting to emerge in the competition as a real force. Pennington Juniors were slowly but surely making progress in the competition, especially by reaching the semi-finals against New Milton. The other semi-final was played out by both the Abbotswood teams. Teams were now playing for a place in the final a chance to make the County Finals at The Rose Bowl (home of the Hampshire Hawks).
With Pennington knocking out early favourites New Milton with a strong performance it was Abbotswood A who they came up against in the final (both teams having won the competition once before). The final once again proved to be a nerve-wrecking affair with the game and the championship being decided on the last ball for the second year running.
It was Pennington who came out on top with Abbotswood A finishing second and New Milton winning the third and fourth playoff against Abbotswood B.
Well done to all the teams and especially to the cricket leaders from Hounsdown Secondary School for umpiring the competition.
