"POULNER RETAIN TITLE IN DRAMATIC FINAL WIN "

This year’s New Forest School Sports Partnership primary hockey competition was a well attended event. 12 teams from 9 schools comprising of over 70 competitors contested for the title of Mini – Hockey Champions for 2010.

In all 3 phase 1 groups the competition was hot. All teams were competing for the 9 places available for the next round. Winners of 1st round stage of the competition were Abbotswood 2, Ashley Junior and last years winners Poulner.

The final 3 in the top group provided some great hockey with the highlight being match 2 between Ashley and the current holders Poulner. Ashley had already beaten Abbotswood 2 by 7 goals to nil in match 1 so a victory for Ashley would have made them tournament winners. They began well by taking a 3 goal lead, but Poulner were not finished and came back to tie the game 3 – 3. This meant that in the final game between Abbotswood 2 and Poulner nothing short of a win by an 8 goal margin would do.

After a dramatic 12 minutes Poulner unbelievably managed to stick 8 past Abbotswood and not concede, meaning they re gained their 2009 crown. Huge congratulations should go to the winners Poulner but Ashley deserve credit for a gallant fight. Many thanks to all teams competing in this years competition, you all played your part and made for an exciting and successful day.
