Cross Country Relays
Gang Warily Recreation Centre
October 15th 2008
The first New Forest Primary School event took place this month at Gang Warily Recreation Centre, Fawley. A record number of more than 260 pupils from all over the New Forest competed against each other in teams of three.
Schools came from all parts of the New Forest of which some were New Milton, Blackfield, Brockenhurst, Calmore, Hyde, Fordingbridge, Marchwood, Hythe, Poulner and Ringwood. The event was run by New Forest Junior Athletics Club Chairman, Tim Wilding and was supported again by the Partnership and Young Leaders from Applemore College.
The event was split into a boy’s race and a girl’s race. The boys were first off the mark, running one lap each before tagging the next member of their team. This event was closely fought throughout the course and was eventually won by Abbotswood Junior School (Totton) who were crowned the new Boys Cross Country Relay Champions.
The girl’s race was next and having seen the boy’s race, they knew what they were in for. The race was started and off they went, running a lap each of a three-lap race. Orchard and Blackfield got out in front early although neither team could withstand the advances from the small South Baddesley School (Lymington) who came though strong and won the race in fantastic style.
Well done to everyone who ran in the event, it was a long way!
