New Forest Primary
Girl's Astro Football at Testwood Sports College
6th November 2009
This year gave another chance for primary school girls in year 5 & 6 to compete for glory in the NFSSP Girls Astro Football Competition held at Testwood Sports College.
In this years New Forest competition there were 8 teams competing in total, from 6 schools. All the teams were divided in to 2 groups for the first section of the competition with every team in each of the groups playing each other. For the second stage of the competition the top 2 winners in each of the groups go forward to a second group and the same with the bottom 2 teams.
In the first group stage there were some very close matches in both pools and the standard and commitment from all the players was extremely high! Despite the close games there were some clear front runners and both the Orchard teams won there groups to qualify for the top group in the second stage. Joining them in the top group were Blackfield and Ashley. The second set of group games saw both the Ringwood teams, Waterside and Barley competing for the spoils.
The second group stage followed the form book. After some close affairs, the 2 Orchard teams rose to the top of the winners group, with the strongly fancied, Orchard ‘A’ beating there ‘B’ team over the 3 games. Blackfield, competing in there very first Girls Astro Competition managed to take home the bronze medals, finishing in 3rd place behind Orchard. Barley topped the second group in 5th place overall, with Waterside, Ringwood ‘B’ and Ringwood ‘A’ finishing 6th, 7th and 8th respectively.
As a Competition Manager, it was fantastic to watch such great play and determination in what was, at times, a rain affected event. Despite the turbulent conditions all the players excelled. A special mention should also go to the Young Leaders (G.C.S.E PE students) that helped out on the afternoon with the refereeing and officiating, great job all!
